Laelia anceps talk by Lourens Grobler

The next meeting will take place at Lourens and Jolisa's house in Alkmaar.
It is the beginning of the flowering season for Laelia anceps and Lourens will be giving a talk on these magnificent orchids.

The idea is to stroll through the greenhouse before the talk and you are welcome to come from 16h30 onwards.  Jolisa will provide the eats, which will be served at 17h00.

Directions to their house:  follow the N4 to Jhb/Pta for about 12 km from Nelspruit.  Turn left at Kwanyoni Lodge (just after Alkmaar fuel station).  Follow the dirt road to the fork and keep left, through the security gate and turn right at 'R3'sign to the gate.  Phone Lourens (082 373 9916) or Jolisa (079 492 9385).

Hope to see you there.

Orchids and a picnic on top of Mpumalanga

We had a wonderful outing to Mount Formosa near Lydenburg.  This amazing piece of land plays host to so many endemic and rare species of Grassland plants.  Luckily, it is protected by Mpumalanga Parks Board and we were allowed entry by them.

The weather was just perfect and the clear skies offered 360 degree views.

Here is a list of the Orchids seen:

Disa amoena
Disa klugei
Disa rungweensis
Disa brevicornis
Disa versicolor
Satyrium longicauda
Satyrium microrhynchum
Disperis tysonii
Disperis renibractea
Schizochilus cecilii transvaalensis
Disa clavicornis
Brownleea parviflora
Brownleea galpinii
Corycium nigrescens
Habenaria lithophila
Holothrix thodei
Disperis stenoplectron
Disa fragrans

Outing to Longtom Mountain range

Sunday 16 February 2014

The LOG is planning a day trip to Longtom Mountain range to go in search of some Summer Rainfall orchids.

We will meet at Louise Stevenson's house (click here for a map) at 08h00 on Sunday morning, 16 February.
Please keep in mind that some areas will only be accessible by 4x4 vehicles and the idea is to get some members to park their cars at Louise's house and then to hitch a ride in a 4x4.  Alternatively, meet us at the Hops Hollow Brewery on Longtom at 09h00.

Disa amoena

Remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, walking shoes, rain gear, camera and a light picnic.

Please let Jolisa (079 492 9385) know if you would like to join us;  we do not want to leave anybody behind.  And of course, non-members are also welcome.

A little bit of background for those who have never been:  The Longtom Mountain range is a hotspot for orchids and other high-altitude plants.  Many species are endemic, and you will not find it anywhere else on the planet.  The vast majority of orchids in the area are terrestrial and will go dormant in Winter and can therefor only be seen for a short period in Summer.  February is a very good month and this year in particular has been especially spectacular.  We have had reports about sightings of some rarely seen species and often in larger colonies than usual.

You can have a sneak peek at some of the orchids and plants here.

We hope to see you there.

Spring show at Halls

The Spring show is happening a bit earlier than normal at Halls Gateway centre. The judges had their work cut out to select the winners amongst the many beautiful entries. But in the end it was Lycaste skinneri x Lyc Shoalhaven that walked away with the trophy for Best on Show. Well done to Afri Orchids and all the other winners too.

The show will be open from Friday, 30 August from 8h00to 17h00, Saturday 8h00to 17h00 and Sunday 8h00 to 15h00.

Margaret Solomon Memorial Plant Sale and Meeting

Angcm leonis 'Inkanyezi'
The late Margaret Solomon left her entire collection of beautiful orchids to the Lowveld Orchid Group.  The committe have decided to move some of the plants to Afri Orchids and then to invite all members to an exclusive sale of the collection.

The sale will take place on Sunday, 22 July only between 10h00 and 12h00 at Afri Orchids and remember it will be strictly first come first serve.

The collection has some amazing plants, many awarded ones and also some previous show winners.  The plants will be very reasonably priced, thus enabling all members to own a plant of this caliber.

Our next meeting was scheduled for 26 July, but we thought it a good idea to combine the meeting and the plant sale.  The greenhouses at Afri Orchids have many plants in flower at the moment and you will see some rare species too.  Also, tea and cake will be served in the garden

For directions or more information phone Lourens on 082 373 9916.
